Semester 1, 2019 - 2020

This is the course website for the MAS3902 Bayesian Inference module taught by Dr. Lee Fawcett.

Schedule of lectures and tutorials

Classes take place on Mondays (3pm-4pm), Tuesdays (1pm-2pm) and Thursdays (2pm-3pm) in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Herschel Building.

In a typical week, two of these classes will be lectures and one will be a problems class/drop-in. The lectures will take place in the Monday and Tuesday slots, and the problems classes/drop-ins will take place in the Thursday slots. In the first two weeks, all slots will be lectures.

There are also occasional group tutorial classes. When these do take place, they will be on Thursdays at 10am or 4pm in the Herschel Learning Lab to support group project work.

A detailed weekly schedule is now available.

Background reading

The book Peter M. Lee - Bayesian Statistics: An Introduction - provides an excellent (and accessible!) introduction to the world of Bayesian Statistics.

James Stone - Bayes' Rule: A Tutorial Introduction to Bayesian Analysis

John Krushke - Doing Bayesian Data Analysis: A Tutorial with R, JAGS, and Stan

You might also find the book by Sharon Bertsch-McGrayne - The Theory That Would Not Die: How Bayes' Rule Cracked the Enigma Code, Hunted Down Russian Submarines, and Emerged Triumphant From Two Centuries of Contoversy - really interesting!

You might also be interested in the paper describing Candidate's formula (see page 22 of the lecture notes).
