Examination Information

11 February 2004. The documents here are out of date although many still apply. Acute observers might have seen the formerly grumpy Chairman of Examiners replaced by a grumpy former Chairman of Examiners. Anyway you should consult SER over any definitive interpretation of policy.

Notices

Updating of these notices

Exam information for students has been brought up to date.

14 February 2002
Files here have been brought up to date to some extent.

14 February 2002: an updated copy of the resit notice for students (on ICA etc). However, if the inclusion of a combined coursework mark would improve the overall mark, it should normally be so used; examiners should indicate clearly on the list of return marks how coursework marks have been used.

18 February 2000: a note on late or missing ICA.

9 January 2001: a document on Conventions for Service Modules draws together all known details on modules we teach for other deoartments and degrees (including Astronomy and Astrophysics). This includes details of how syllabuses, exam papers etc. are dealt with. Plaese let me know if you find errors or omissions.

9 January 2001: the web-based exam information for students has been updated. Students can find it from the link to "Examination information" under the heading "Other student information" on the main School web page.

Exam Documuments

Over a period of time, a number (but not all of) the exam documents will be made available on this site.

Significant parts of Instructions and Procedures are now available (as of 6/12/2000) as well as commentaries on setting and marking.

Section C Instructions to Examiners.

Section D Procedures for marking Exam scripts.

Some checklists extracted from Section D:

Section E Module Classification Criteria, Mark range criteria for Stages 0 and 1, Degree Classification Criteria. These criteria are the criteria for individual modules. Instructions on scaling usually tell that you to scale (piece-wise linearly) so that candidates are placed in appropriate classes or mark ranges. These criteria tell you what you should be looking for when deciding class or mark range boundaries.

Section G ICA samples will be required each Semester. You are not asked to collect homework samples every week or every fortnight, just once per semester.

Here are the notes and commentaries.
