In MAS102, MAS111, MAS121 and MAS131 you need to score at least 30 in each Semester in order to pass the module (as well as scoring at least 40 overall) - if you score less than 30 in one semester then you cannot score more than 34 overall in the module. A new policy applies here for 2001/2002 in that candidates on MAS211, MAS221 and MAS231 do not need to score at least 30 in each semester.
There is another new policy for 2001/2002. In MAS102, MAS111, MAS121, MAS131, MAS211, MAS221 and MAS231, there are resit papers for each semester (thus two papers for each module). If you are required to resit one of these modules you may choose whether to sit both or just one paper. If you fail to turn up for one paper, then the mark for your previous attempt will be carried forward. (In MAS102, MAS111, MAS121 and MAS131 you still need to have scored at least 30 in each semester in order to pass the module.) In most cases we would advise you to take the papers for both semesters. You might wish to know the mark for your attempt at the Semester 2 paper in June. You will know the Semester 1 mark from the February transcript and the overall mark from the June transcript and so you can calculate your Semester 2 mark to within 1 mark unless the overall returned mark is 34. If you have received a mark of 34, then there are three possibilities: (i) the Semester 1 mark is at least 39, in which case the Semester 2 mark is at most 29; (ii) the Semester 1 mark is below 30, in which case the Semester 2 mark is at least 38; (iii) the Semester 1 mark is between 30 and 38, in which case the Semester 2 mark can be calculated to within 1 mark. If you need further information on your Semester 2 mark please contact me.
If you fail one or more of MAS003, MAS052, MAS055, MAS161 and MAS162, the approaches to the Mathematics and Statistics components are different. The Mathematics components are dealt with in the standard way (the resit mark is based solely on the exam paper or papers - but see * below).
The Statistics components are different.
There are two parts of the Statistics assessment contributing towards the regular exam (in February /June). The coursework contributes towards 50% and the Test contributes towards 50%.
In the resit you have a choice: either carry forward the Statistics mark in its entirety or take the resit Test [one resit Test in each of MAS052, MAS055, MAS161 and MAS162, but one Test for each Semester in MAS003]. If you take the resit Test, then your Statistics mark will be the mark on the Test without any coursework contribution. In MAS003 the two Semesters are examined independently, so you might choose to take a resit Test in one Semester but carry forward the Statistics mark in the other Semester.
* Although a resit mark is usually based solely on the exam paper(s), this does not prevent an examiner from using discretion to award a higher mark on the basis of good coursework.
