       Welcome to my homepage !

I was born in Milan (Italy), graduated in theoretical physics at the University of Milan, and obtained my PhD at the University of Oregon (USA). I am Professor of Fluids Dynamics in the Applied Mathematics group of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Newcastle University, and Co-Director of the Newcastle-Durham Joint Quantum Centre (JQC).

I am fascinated by vortices, at all length scales: from vortices in ordinary (classical) fluids, to vortices in astrophysical fluids, to quantum vortices in superfluid helium (He4 and He3) and in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In am particularly interested in turbulence and in the observed similarities / differences between turbulence in ordinary fluids and turbulence in quantum fluids (called quantum turbulence).

For my work on quantum fluids and quantum vortices, I have been elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2009 and Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2002. I have been a member of the EPSRC College since 2006.
